Meet Newt Gingrich.
No not really, but I thought about naming him that HA HA!
This has got to be one of the coolest and cutest critters you can find! Newts in general are just cute and fun to play with I think. Y'all know me, I love critters like these so I'll always find them cute. How can you not resist the urge to want to play with these cute little guys? Now that I found them it makes me more excited to live in Tennessee.
I found a couple of them actually. They come out and relax in the middle of the road. That's where I found these guys. I believe they do this to absorb the heat from the pavement. They are amphibians you know so they are cold blooded. So they need heat. Sadly, this does tend to lead to lots of them getting run over. In fact, I saw a couple squashed ones on my walk. I'm glad I was able to rescue these two. At least for now till they crawl back out in the middle of the road again. It just gives me an excuse now to go for more walks to find more of them HA HA.
This is what their underbellies look like. Look at how vivid its colors are!!! That is bright! It is hard to miss seeing these little guys when you are walking down the road. They should be called something like Fire Bellied Newts. They already got Fire Bellied Toads so why not? They got the name Red Spotted Newt from the redish/orange spots on it's back.
Red Spotted Newts that are bright orange are actually young newts or "juveniles." Some Herpetologists call them "Red Efts." They will eventually metamorphosis into adults changing colors and will live 90% of the rest of their lives in water. You'll find them in creeks and ditches and in moist habitats.
(Gary Nafis, californiaherbs.com) Once adults, their pretty vivid orange and red colors change to an ugly green and yellow. That's when you can really see the red spots on their back, hence how they got their name. I find it interesting that they go from being real pretty, to being real ugly. The ugly truth about becoming an adult HA HA! What am I saying!? They are still cute.
