A few more day's and the soul's around the world will be merry spirits. Or is that merry on spirits. In a normal time people would be gathered in Bars. and half an hour before midnight the bar would begin hopping with people ordering drinks. Just to make sure they had one at midnight.
Fights will probably break out this year in the kitchens over who gets to drink from the whiskey bottle first.

We all take the song as meaning forgive those who have done you wrong.
The poem was written by a Scottish bloke, Robert Burns in 1788. Old Fella ain't he. I think I met him once in Falkirk. Nice chap, well spoken.
It had nothing to do with the new year when it was written.
To me the song is about a piss up. A few blokes getting slaughtered and talking about old times. Whiskey and Gin fuelling the tongue and mind to free speech.
All done so anything can be said and tomorrow we won't bring up the bad stuff. We forget them.
Not an easy thing to do by any measure. You have to remember the past. Somehow within that you have to be able to treat someone the same way you previously did. Despite not agreeing with something they id or said. Or maybe didn't do or say at a time.
So we will sing the song we really have no clue what the words are. But we are drunk enough to sing along with the chorus.
Come the new year we will forget all the promises of being nicer better people. Of making more of an effort to meet up with each other.
Go back to our daily routines and wonder why the world is still messed up in this day and age.
The answer is simple. All those changes you said you would do... Well, you didn't. That's all it takes not to make a difference.
