The NFL owners voted on Tuesday evening to approve a rule proposal that allows for offensive and defensive pass interference, including non-calls, to be subject to review.
Rich McKay said last Tuesday 27th that defensive pass interference and offensive pass interference are by far the most impactful foul in the rule book. There has been controversy around this rule for as far that I can remember, but this phenomenon exponentially increased since the Rams-Saints call on the final minutes of the game, almost leaving New Orleans lifeless.
The game is meant to flow, constants stops make it boring and players lose momentum, that’s why the committee doesn’t allow every play to be subject to review. McKay also said that the referee´s made an outstanding improvement last season time-related. Therefore, that extra effort referees had gave the opportunity to OPI and DFI to be a reviewable play.
Coaches can challenge those calls in the first 28 minutes of each half. In the final two minutes of each half, those calls will be subject to a booth review.
This rule change is only for the 2019 season.
