- The building, which is close to the North Pole, hosts seed samples from around the world.
Norwegian authorities have announced that they will invest 13 million dollars for reconditioning the Svalbard Revelation Depot.
- Work is needed to strengthen the concrete structure, but also a new tunnel, which cannot be flooded by the melting of the snow. Because of climate warming, the 10-year-old building was flooded.
Seeds sent around the world are brought here to ensure crop survival in the event of a catastrophe.
Currently, over 5,000 plant species are housed, but the construction can accommodate up to 4.5 million varieties.
The warehouse has already proven its importance. In 2015, more seeds were taken from here to rebuild a destroyed
crop in Lebanon and Morocco.
After the crops were rebuilt, the authorities sent back seed samples.
The work to be done here is specially designed to prevent the flood of the Warehouse. Because of the heating of permafrost, in 2016 the water entered 15 meters into the tunnel, writes Mashable.
