Next up in my adventure in the Norwegian first and top division i pick Fredrikstad Football.
THE START OF FREDRIKSTAD FOOTBALL CLUB
This team is one of the teams that has a great history and it all started back in 1903. That is the year this club was founded. Due to the lack of opponents, this foundation was actually the third attempt to establish a club in Fredrikstad.
FFK played its first match in NM in 1905 against the Porsgrund Football Club, but won its first NM match against Gjøvik-Lyn in 1908. During the German occupation 1940-1945, organized football was not going very well. However, after the war, it bloomed like nothing before and Fredrikstad football club reached 3-cup finals in 4 years but lost them all.
THE GREAT 50s AND 60s
The 50s and 60s were especially successful years for FFK. The club took home the league six times and silver seven times. The cup won four times. In 1957, a new milestone was reached when FFK won their second "the double".
After winning the league team in 1960, Fredrikstad participated in the European Cup as the first Norwegian team of talented personality. FFK sensationally won 4-3 over Ajax home. The result in the second match was 0-0.
The downturn
FFK was a league between divisions all the way up to 1984, and even if the club won the cup this year, the 1984 gold started the start of a long downturn for Fredrikstad. With all nine series championships and eleven cup championships in the closet, the red trousers glimpse with their questions from the top of Norwegian football in the rest of the 80's and throughout the 90's.
The stadium
The old Fredrikstad stadium was established in 1914 and had a grass pitch in 1921. The Fredrikstad stadium was the first stadium in Norway with floodlight. The audience record was seen in 1956 in a battle against Larvik Turn. 15 534 attendees met up to see this quarterfinal in the cup. The last upgrade of the stadium where done before the 2004 season, with one consecutive audience capacity of 10 500 people.
In May 2007, Fredrikstad Stadium was voted as the most beautiful stadium in Norway
TODAY
In 2017, Fredrikstad football club plays in the first division in Norway. They are currently struggling to maintain stability. They are currently in 14 place with 2 wins, 7 draws and 7 losses. Let`s all hope they can get back to the normal level in the top division…
My next team will be posted tomorrow so stay tuned!
Thank you :)
