You could also correlate it with the concept of like attracts like. But to say that "you get what you aim for" is not literally true. But it is conceptually true. As you get what the universe have to give you from that energy of what you aim for, or something to that effect.
Meaning if you put all your energy into wanting a Ferrari, does not equate to; you will get a Ferrari. But you might earn enough money to buy one if you chose.
But you probably understand that :)
Regardless, its a useful universal law to know about and understand indeed. :)
