I'm sure there are quite a few Steemit skeptics of the whole coronavirus thing - interested to skim your posts.
Here is me defending the skeptics a bit :). [YT description below, but it would be awesome if a few of you would be willing to subscribe on YT and weigh in once in a while in the comments--a lot of red-pilling needed out in the world, especially about socialism and government control threats that people are so historically oblivious to!]
My coronavirus commentary (with better audio), below (video also in comments)
Topics covered:
- why were/are so many resistant to taking it seriously?
- should we fear government control in a crisis?
- how to handle disagreement and civil discourse
- how gratefulness is crucial for understanding this pandemic
This is more of a current events video, but not totally out of keeping with the #SocialismSongs series. Basically, I try to explain why a large portion of the population was initially reticent to jump into what they were perceiving as hysteria and fear. I think it's mostly that we are overwhelmed by or tired/distrusting of the tone of fear in so much of our civil discourse via news and social media. Of course, some people are worried about the danger of government set up/control and conspiracy, and I discuss how socialism or other corrupt systems have rarely been put in place without there first being a crisis of some sort.
Just so it's clear: at this point, I am taking this seriously for the sake of the vulnerable population and medical workers. I think that's wise, especially after hearing the stories and update coming out of Italy.
One of the main takeaways is that I hope we can be more generous in the way we see each other and have more mutually beneficial good faith conversations about real things. I am being straightforward that I approach these questions as a conservative, Catholic millennial, but my desire is for everyone, especially in a democratic society, to become more intellectually rigorous and honest with regard to the questions that matter and the facts that come.
While I've said I don't approach these things as an academic, it's probably important to mention that I have a fairly extensive academic background and have done a lot of reading over the years, and I also have many personal friends with their own testimonies about government control/socialism/communism in their home countries.
This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular commentary. I'll be sharing the gamut from politics, culture, and art, to love, injustice, and true humanity. You can check out my song "Venezuela" (song #1 of the #SocialismSongs theme about what happened there) here:
