Here is the first commentary of my #SocialismSongs series about the first song, "Venezuela," which you can listen to here:
I can admit that the tone in some parts of this is not ideal, along with some missed nuances I thought but didn't say, particularly about the non-radicals on the left (it's hard to say everything that needs to be said), and I thought a lot about whether to post as is or re-record. I decided to post. It's imperfect, and I'll use it as a take-off point for learning as I continue. What I see as success with these is not an airtight commentary but the facilitation of thoughtful engagement by listeners.
We all have real questions about what socialism is, what happened in Venezuela, whether it's the same as democratic socialism, and what all of this may mean for us in other Western countries.
The fact is that everywhere true socialism has been implemented it has been disastrous--particularly for the poorest, for whom it is purportedly implemented. Today I discuss what happened in Venezuela, why socialism always leads to this kind of outcome (without historical exception!), as well as why I refuse to spell "woman" in the way the radicals would have me do so in order to rob the word and my identity. Remember: "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution."
Don't let the radicals control you, your language, your culture, and your identity, no matter where you are on the political spectrum. Think for yourself. Read some real history (not what your radical left sociology professor probably had you read). Honour the many dead and currently tormented under communism/socialism's flawed rule.
For radicals, everything is for the sake of the revolution and dismantling what you care about. Don't be one of them, and don't be fooled by them. Don't negotiate with terrorists.
Let's learn from Venezuela and honour the suffering of their people, especially their poor.
This is part of an ongoing "song theme" series I'll be doing throughout 2020 with regular commentary. I'll be sharing the gamut from politics, culture, and art, to love, injustice, and true humanity. It won't all be politics or as intense as this series, but it will all be from an honest conservative, Catholic, millennial perspective.
Other themes will include childhood, widows & orphans, love songs, heartbreak, grief, culture, men, Canada.. and much more.
Subscribe to follow along on my hike through these chaotic times. Civilization is still worth fighting for.
