Expedition to catch fish today

On this occasion I was given the opportunity by a wooden boat captain or fishing boat named CV. Atlantic 2 to sail and fish in the high seas as well as the fishermen of Gampông Pusong Lama Lhokseumawe in their daily activities as freelance fishermen.

Our trip really made me experienced in seeing first hand how the crew and other crew caught fish in the ocean using trawlers in the ocean. We started from the port base to the open sea for 12 hours on the way, but luck did not take sides with me because the waves in the ocean are so big that it makes my head dizzy and nauseous, so I don't have time to see how they catch fish.

For one day and one night I suffer from vomiting and work is only sleeping because when I hold my head up, the vomiting in the stomach always comes out, I suffer from seasickness, so I choose to always sleep during fishing activities.

So that I do not have time to take pictures and record their activities on the high seas when they are fishing.

But when we returned to the mainland or harbor, my nausea disappeared and also had time to take or photograph some photos of their activities while lowering their catch. Their efforts today are very successful because they got big fish and big squid, you can see giant squid trapped in the ocean.

Get a giant squid

Catches from these freelancers often have catches in the form of big fish like tuna, suree, and other big fish that have been understood by every fisherman, but now they are surprised by the discovery of giant squids that are very rarely found.

I personally have never seen a giant squid the size of a large barrel lid, in general they catch small squid that are usually like the previous days.

But the squid caught today is an extraordinary catch of giant size compared to ordinary squid in general.

The size of a giant squid

When we talk about the size of a squid in general, the size in general has a length of about 1 meter with a width of 5 inches while weighing up to 2 kilo grams. However, the size of this squid is 1.7 meters in size by 0.5 meters wide while its body weight reaches 50 kilos grams.

Squid that are currently caught only have two tails, one of which is the size as mentioned above and the other has a smaller size than the size of the first squid.

What you see in the photo is the second squid while the first squid cannot be lifted by the crew, the squid is placed on top of the blue barrel lid exactly what you see in the photo.

The giant squid is only placed on a fishing trawler neatly arranged on the edge of the fishing boat's edge. While the other squid was briefly stored in a barrel / fiber in a manual cooler.

When we arrived at the mainland or at the port of the ship, the traders came to offer the price of the squid, the traders offered the price of 30 thousand rupiah per kilo, but the crew offered 50 thousand rupiah per kilo gram.

After a long-term bargaining, they agreed on a squid price of 45 thousand rupiah per kilo gram.

The two giant squid weighed 95 kilograms at a price of 45,000 rupiah per kilo. So if we calculate it, then get the results from today's order of 4.275,000 rupiah and the results of the catch will not be included in the general income of the owner of the CV. ATLANTIC 2 because the squid was considered to be the by-catch of fishermen and crew on the boat.

In between activities, I take the time to interview the squid trader in terms of the next steps in trading back or to where will the giant squid be traded? Or where are the giant squid sale? Then they replied that, the giant squid will be exported to other regions, namely Medan City and the manager will sell to elite restaurants located in the City area.

These giant squid are not sold at the traditional Lhokseumawe market because buyers are very limited to the community. Then the squid trader will take over the squid to be traded back to restaurants that have trade relations with them. Of course they will also take advantage of the sale, but the seller does not divulge the actual price purchased by the restaurant.

Traditional fisherman or boat crew CV. ATLANTIC 2 is very happy today, because their efforts produce results that are different from other ordinary days.

Likewise, personally I also feel happy because I have seen things that have never been seen so far like the size of a giant squid as mentioned earlier.

Then I also felt happy because I was given a fee or given a catch even though I did not work when fishing in the high seas, because I experienced something painful in the form of seasickness.

It turns out that traditional Acehnese fishermen are very good, they still consider me as a crew or partner in fishing in the high seas.
