Hello/Hi Friends
I hope you all are doing well.
Walking through the pavements beside ganga river with my argumentative brother, I started talking about reservation quota given to the backward castes and women in the society. I was always against this reservation quota before today because I am not under this quota. With that eye-opening debate with my brother now I think it is somewhat good but some changes must be done in this reservation policies. Today I am gone cover all the frames of this huge arguing topic.
WHY THIS DISCUSSION IS VERY SERIOUS
Resources are at stake
Radially opposite views of people
No healthy discussion /debates
Confirmation bias
Selective avoidance
DEVELOP RIGHT UNDERSTANDING IN THIS ISSUE
When discussing or debating about something that can affect lives of people all around, you must need to be a person who is unbiased and not think about his/her benefits and losses, one who is neutral then you will lead to right conclusion.
Objectivity-Think by using facts.
Impartiality-Be impartial /unbiased.
Neutrality-Put your values and interests in delete box for the time being you are discussing.
DISCRIMINATION
Individual Discrimination-Discrimination with individual person.
Social Discrimination-Discrimination with large group of people on the basis of caste, religion, race, gender and sometime for poor economic status. This is dangerous and need social justice.
Here I want to share a story of a brave woman named as Nangeli.
It is the time of 19th century in the state of Travancore breast tax is implemented on lower caste woman. Under this tax they have to pay tax for covering their breasts. Due to this woman not wear clothes in their breast. The day when a woman named Nangeli wear clothes in his breast, the soldiers came and ask for the tax and Nangeli cut off her breasts in an effort to protest against a caste-based breast tax and she died due to excessive bleeding. From this incident that tax system occurs to an end in that community.img source -google
Another great social reformer is BR Ambedkar, he is the one who plays very important role in campaigning against social discrimination towards the untouchables in India. Too many words needed to describe this legend social reformer, will write another documentary blog on him.img source -google
What happened in past always affect the present and that is what happened with lower castes. It needed to be correct as they left beyond progress. One way of doing affirmative action is reservation.
RESERVATION
Reservation simply means to fix some quota for a particular community.
It is of two types: horizontal and vertical.
Horizontal Reservation: It refers to the equal opportunity provided to other categories of beneficiaries such as women, veterans, the transgender community, and individuals with disabilities, cutting through the vertical categories. Article 15 (3) of the Constitution contemplates horizontal reservation.
Vertical Reservation: Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes is referred to as vertical reservation. It applies separately for each of the groups specified under the law. Article 16(4) of the Constitution contemplates vertical reservation.
Reservation Quota
A survey by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) put the OBC population in the country at 40.94%, the SC population at 19.59%, ST population at 8.63% and the rest at 30.80%((20%EWS)).
Reservation quota varies according to state but below is given quota by central govt. for central based institutions where reservation is applied: -
SC-15%
ST-7.5%
OBC-27%
EWS-10%img source-google
Welfare Policies: -There are too many countries which are doing affirmative action and giving preferences to low progressive communities for e.g.: -USA, Canada, UK, Sweden, Finland, China, Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan, etc.
ARGUMENTS
Favour:
• Participation in every field should be equal to their population percentage in the country.
• As in the earlier times resources are taken away from backward classes, it is needed to give them some extra advantage to do equal participation in the progress of the country.
• Growing together will lead to a developed nation.
Opposition:
• Reverse discrimination.
• We are not responsible for what happened in past so, why we are paying for it.
• This is against meritocracy.
IS MERITOCRACY THE BEST SYSTEM?
It is good for
• global competition
• science tech. fields
• and defence/biotech/space fields.
The biggest problem regarding this system is vicious circle. Rich becomes richer and poor becomes poorer.
Now come to the point where people say that merit, they have is developed by them. Great influencer Karl Marx and Gandhiji used to say that merits of a person are not developed by him/her, they are because of good environment.
MERIT DEPENDS ON:
- Genes - by default.
- Environment - parents, family, educational institution ,community and extra facilities.
MY VIEWS
We cannot ignore that discrimination is done with some communities and women in the past. If we are ready to take the wealth of our ancestors so why we are not ready to pay for the evils done by them. But we have to see that people who are taking advantage are really needed it. Criteria should be made by considering their economic conditions.Benefits should meet the needy, not greedy people. Not only progress but the progress by taking all together means a perfect democracy.
The balance between social justice and merits leads a nation to a developed one.
Hope you will like it and let me know in the comments your opinions on this topic ......
