Part 1
Ok, that pic is definitely not my place lol. I don't have any pics quite yet of our off grid efforts. I'll get some soon and in the meantime I'll be using stock photos.
This photo does make me a little jelly though. I would love to have a cabin like that.
Actually that's not true, I want an earthbag cupola with limestone plaster.
What I'm really jealous of though are the trees...
I would really love to have some trees lol.
We technically have like 5 or something junipers on the back edge of our property but really provide almost nothing for shade.
Alright, living off grid
I'll just get my first suggestion out of the way for anyone wanting to go off grid...
Bring fuckin money!!!!
Going off grid is not for the faint of heart.
This is very much the same as my first suggestion about homesteading but with living off grid it's a bit more important cause you gotta get water and power and all that stuff going and that takes buying things you aren't likely to make yourself.
Now, if you don't care about things like:
Any sort of climate control at all,
Having power,
Having water,
and the simple things like staying alive and happy...
Then you may not care if you bring money.
For us, having no money and being off grid was a terrible combo.
However, we've just done it for 4 years without any money.
We're alive still...
Somehow...
So we must have done at least a couple things right.
I'll explain in more detail some of the nitty gritty stuff about living off grid in future posts. This is more meant as an introduction to it all.
I want to point out something first though.
Many youtubers you see with "off grid" channels are not actually off grid.
A lot of them have grid tie, are fully on grid, have whatever back up, and/or are merely sharing ideas they have for off grid living because it's a hip keyword or a personal interest.
The ones that really are off grid essentially all had the money to make it happen when they attempted it.
We straight up didn't.
I want anyone reading this and any future posts of mine to know one thing...
We are fully off grid and have literally no way to ever be on a grid.
Well, without a ton of money to pay the electric company to run lines out this far. There are some on the other side of the valley they put up in the 60s...
Back when they thought they would make this place some sort of private community and filed to have it all as an HOA.
Now, I don't know about you but I've never seen cows, horses and llama running around in any HOA I've seen.
This was also the first time I've seen an HOA clear the hell out in the middle of nowhere.
They don't upkeep the roads or provide anything at all for those that live here...
No one that lives here pays them...
They sold the original HOA meeting house to some crazy lady named Milly that i'm certain either has a crush on Daryl from across the valley or wants him dead...
really can't tell.
Also, not one person on this alleged board of the HOA live within an 8 hour drive of us nor have any of them actually been up here.
These fuckers live all the way down in LA!
So, a bunch of city slickers made this place a legal HOA like 60 years ago...
Never did a damn thing with the place after and went belly up...
Now, they are still collecting from all the businesses and such that own land here, have never been here and don't know thet there's really not an HOA here.
Lmfao
Ok, so you hear me throw around the phrase "city slicker" a lot.
I don't mean that the way some do. So if you live in the city and hear this from me don't worry. It's a specific mentality that I call city slicker and I don't view them as inferior, only comical.
I'll explain what I consider a city slicker in the next post.
To be continued...
