Defending the Single Leg with style.
Single leg take downs are a very high percentage take-down employed in MMA, BJJ and Wrestling. There are many ways to defend a single leg. The Whizzer is the most common defense, basically you achieve an under-hook on the same side as the leg that you're opponent has trapped. Then you would use that under-hook to lift up and turn, while using the other hand to frame the opponents head, lastly you will push down with the trapped leg. Another more risky defense is to make a Kimura grip on one of you're opponents arms, sit you're but down and toward your opponent trying to get under him while using a butterfly hook to kick your opponent over you. The goal here is pull with the Kimura grip while pushing with the butterfly hook from under the opponent (basically a Judo Tominagi with Kimura grip). There are several other defenses to a single, I have even seen someone back-flip out of a single leg, but let us focus on the one in this video.
First let me say that this move works best for a high crotch single leg, but it can be employed on any single leg where you're opponents head is on the inside. When your opponent locks up the single, you must immediately bring your foot to the outside and start to frame them. You can do this by simply using your forearm or you can whizzer and frame with your other hand while setting up for the front roll. Now the idea for this to work is to get you're opponent to bend over, you're opponent will thing that he is close to finishing the take-down as you start to fold forward. Now once you are able, turn outward slightly almost like you are going to give up your back, then reach under between you're legs for you're opponents elbow then explosively perform a forward roll. As soon as your butt touches the mat reach for their hip so they can not forward roll out of the Omoplata. If however they roll out, its okay, you still escaped the single and if you scramble can end up in top position. This technique works because it is quick and unexpected, (this could be said about many techniques) but in order to make this work do not telegraph or hesitate. As soon as you think you are able to reach the opponents elbow go for it! One more thing to mention, if you are in a Gi match you do not even need the elbow, you can make a grip anywhere on the arm, even the sleeve and still pull this off.
Let me know what your think, I would love to hear from all of you, Follow so you do not miss the next article and resteem so more people can find it. Enjoy!
