Jeab is the name of the owner of a garden nursery in Nongkhai whom I have known via an old tuk-tuk driver. Jeab is very hard working as she is married with a ten years old daughter. Her husband' s nick name is Kai; so this is a family of chicken (kai) and chick (jeab)! I often teased them during the first year of our friendship. In the beginning, they were quite poor and had to try this small business to feed the family. So, I used to buy plants from them almost every week. I also commissioned them to get big trees for me and to plant them in my garden. So, some time they worked whole day in my garden.
There was a strange incident one afternoon. Jeab would bring her own cooked food for her family and workers to share together at lunch time. This was quite elaborate and impressive to me as I hardly cook for myself (a very inefficient cook I am). She would bring her rice cooker, dishes and plates and plastic cups, a whole set for a picnic In my garden. They even brought a woven mat to sit under the shade!
Jeab decided not to do the washing up of all the plates and utensils, instead she put them in a carrying bag and placed the bag on the floor. I asked her to put the bag on the table, but she said it was alright on the floor. Within ten minutes, my neighbour's dog called "Black-Nose" (I gave all the dogs in this area their names!) came on to my lawn and went for the carrying bag full of plates, bowls, forks and spoons. She carried the heavy bag in her mouth and ran off into the bamboo jungle nearby.
We couldn't believe the audacity of Black-Nose! She must have thought that there was some food inside the bag. Jeab should have done her washing or put that bag on the table. We chased after the dog but we couldn't find her. We could never recover the bag and its content till today. I felt sorry for Black-Nose as she wouldn't find any food inside the bag; and I felt sorry for Jeab too. She had to buy a new set of dishes, bowls and so on.
Nowadays, Jeab and her business is doing well as she is very honest and never tries to make too much profit from her customers. Now she has many regular customers from Laos and other provinces. They would deliver trees and plants to customers' houses.
Being an old customer and her good friend, Jeab would be willing to find me special trees from other places. She often gives me extra plants whenever I stopped by. Last time she gave me twenty small papaya plants to distribute to my friends. So, I always give her extra money to cover the cost of her gifts.
This weekend Jeab brought me special plants from Pisanulok province. I bought almost twenty small plants for planting along the fence. I also bought two red rose plants without thorns as an experiment. Last time, an old friend gave me four lovely roses shrubs, they all got eaten by insects, not a single leaf was left uneaten.
This weekend is going to be a test of endurance as the weather has suddenly turn hot again! But working in the garden always gives me extra grounding energy and more stamina. The air is clean and light around the river, I am wishing for a little rain on Sunday so that we don't have to water the plants!
เจียบเป็นเจ้าของร้านเพาะชำต้นไม้ที่หนองคาย ตาแก่ๆที่ขับตุ๊กตุ๊กเป็นคนพาไปซื้อต้นไม้ที่นี่ตั้งแต่แรกเลย ตอนนั้นเธอพึ่งจะเริ่มต้นทำธุรกิจนี้จากไม่มีอะไรเลย เจียบเป็นคนขยันและอดทนมากเพราะมีลูกสาวอายุสิบขวบหนึ่งคน สามีเธอชื่อไก่ ตกลงครอบครัวนี้เป็นตระกูลไก่และลูกไก่(เจียบ) ครอบครัวนี้ดีมากจึงขอให้มาช่วยปลูกต้นไม้และสั่งซื้อต้นไม้มาหลายต้น บางวันต้องมาทำงานกันทั้งวันที่สวน
วันหนึ่งเกิดเรื่องแปลกๆที่บ้าน เจี๊ยบนำทีมมาทำงานกันหลายคนและขนอาหารกลางวันมาแบ่งกัน เธอขนจานชามของใช้ในครัวมาเกือบครบ มีแม้กระทั่งหม้อหุงข้าวไฟฟ้า แลดูเปมือนจะมาปิกนิกชุดใหญ่ มีอาหารหลายอย่าง และเอาเสื่อสานมากปูใต้ต้นไม้ใหญ่ พอกินข้าวเสร็จเธอก็ไม่ล้างจาน เก็บทุกอย่างใส่ถุงเพื่อเอากลับบ้าน แต่เธอวางถุงบนพื้น และไม่ยอมนำไปไว้บนโต๊ะตามคำทักท้วง
อีกสิบนาทีต่อมา เจ้าจมูกดำสุนัขของเพื่อนบ้านเดินเข้ามา เผลอนิดเดียวมันตรงเข้าไปคาบถุงใส่จานชามนั้น แล้ววิ่งหายไปในป่าไผ่ พวกเราออกตามหาเท่าไรก็ไม่พบทั้งจมูกดำและจานชามทั้งหมด ตราบจนทุกวั้นนี้ก็ยังไมีมีใครพบเห็นชุดจานชามหลายสิบใบนั้นเลย. สงสารเจ้าจมูกดำที่คิดว่ามีอาหารอยู่ในถุง และสาสารเจี๊ยบที่ต้องไปหาซื้อจานชามใหม่อีกชุดใหญ่
ปัจจุบันธุรกิจขายต้นไม้ไปได้ดีมาก. เพราะครอบครัวนี้ขยันและซื่อสัตย์ ไม่เอาเปรียบลูกค้า และมีบริการส่งต้นไม้ถึงบ้านจึงทำให้มีลูกค้าประจำหลายแห่งและมีจากลาวด้วย เธอชอบแถวต้นไม้ให้ประจำ ครั้งก่อนให้ต้นมะละกอมาเกือบยี่สิบต้น บอกให้เอาไปแจกคนก็ได้ เวลาไปซื้อต้นไม้ก็คิดถูกมาก จึงต้องเพิ่มเงินให้เพื่อให้เป็นค่าต้นไม้ที่แถมมาด้วย เธอพึ่งไปหาต้นไม้มาให้จากพิษณุโลก วันนี้ลองเอากุหลาบไม่มีหนามมาปลูกสองต้น เพื่อนเคยให้มาสี่ต้นโดนแมลงกินใบจนไม่มีเหลือแม้แต่ใบเดียว อาทิตย์นี้อากาศกลีบมาร้อนกว่าเดิม อยากให้มีฝนตก จะได้ไม่ต้องรดนํ้าต้นไม้
