Recently while out on rides I noticed my e-dirtbike would not go above 20MPH. Quite surprised by this I looked into what was going on. It has 17 horsepower and should go a lot faster even with my large body on it. 60MPH suppose to be its top speed so I found this quite strange.
I found there is a speed limiter built in from the factory. The solution is to cut a wire in the power harness. I was unsure of this method at first, but with no info from the manufacturer about this I had to go off forums on the internet.
I looked around on the internet for a bit to make sure this was correct. As nothing in the manual stated this, so wanted to make sure I was not some terrible prank and I was about to damage my bike.
Pulling off the horn cover exposed the power harness for the e-dirtbike.
Seeing the brown wire with the loop in it tells me that is the one to cut from the research I did on the internet. Seems like the company that made it gave an option to add a switch this way, or just to make it really obvious what to cut to unlock the bikes full potential.
The wire is now cut, just as I was about to cut it I had silly thoughts in my head like is the battery going to explode when I cut this wire or the horn is going to blast in my ear next it when I cut it. Luckily nothing of the sort happened..lol
With the speed limiter wire cut its time to put it all back together.
With the power harness pushed back into place and the horn cover and fender back on its time to take it for a ride.
Honestly I was a little nervous, now with its "training wheels" taken off its quite powerful.
Probably not dressed proper for seeing if it can go over 20mph. Should have had long pants on for sure.
I took it out for a ride and sure enough it surpasses the 20MPH limit now. I have not gone much past that yet, but knowing its unlocked is nice. Silly I had to cut a wire to make it do that though.
So I guess my bike is "modded" now. Next up is to add some good brush guards, and will probably upgrade the light on it if I want to take it out riding at night. Besides that its ready a badass bike as is. Maybe when the tires wear out I will get more knobby ones but thats awhile from now.
