Greetings Ηive!
The first article of the SPECIALISED USES OF MEDITERRANEAN FLORA series is on the works. Yesterday was a very productive day. Me and my associate johnysPS toured the protected forest of Kavala, in search of the first plant that will be discussed (no spoiling!). Johny is a photographer and a true nature enthusiast. Needless to say, when he learned about the project we instantly agreed to participate.
We started our journey with a 10 minute drive from Kavala.
When we parked the car, we couldn't help but take a picture of this interesting fella eating his breakfast. This particular flower is called "catifes" .It is really flourishing in the local ecosystem and climate. It is originated from Mexico. During older times, farmers were planting it around their crops to protect them from harmfull insects. (comment if you want me to make an article for catifes as part of the SPECIALISED USES OF MEDITERRANEAN FLORA series)
The scenery was magnificent. Violeta, johnysPs's dog was invited to the outing. She was really excited!!
In the ancient times, there was a great greek settlement in this area, named Skavala. Our ancestors were using this road to get to the settlement's port. The ancient little port is nowadays the Kavala city. In the place where the ancient settlement of Skavala used to be, there is a small village named Old Kavala.
Ah! The beautiful creek! We are approaching the little Old Kavala waterfall...
Vital source of fresh water from ancient times till today. There used to be an old watermill here. During summer season, this place is very popular. You can even take a dip in the crystall clean waters.
Finally, we are entering the denser part of the forest. This looks really promising.
We found lots of speciments and we observed the details regarding the plant we will discuss and its surrounding mirco-ecosystem.This was a succesfull mission and we deeply enjoyed it!
Tree of wisdom.
Violeta doesn't want to leave! Don't worry girl! You are invited to all future outings!
