Sophie Gengembre Anderson ( 1823 - 1903 ) was a French-born British artist who specialised in genre painting of Victorian children and women . She studied portrait painting under Baron Charles von Steuben in Paris . Despite her excellent painting technique it was not easy for women at that time to have a successful artistic career .
She collaborated with her husband Walter Anderson on portraits of Protestant Episcopal bishops. 1854 they moved to England where Sophie Anderson gained fame as a painter exhibiting her artworks at the Royal Academy .
