Growing food in space is one of the necessity that we must first master in order to achieve interplanetary travel. Growing your own food means that you won't have to bring huge quantity of preprepared food during lift offs which means saving a lot of space for more stuff to bring. Furthermore, with the plants on board, astronauts get free carbon dioxide-oxygen converter.
Earlier this month, humanity had successfully grown a plant in the moon via a Chinese spacecraft that had landed there. Though it had died after some time due to the extremely cold temperature, this experiment proved that it's possible to grow a forest on the lunar landscape.
