I've always thought of Hive (and the legacy chain) as the Wild West. You just never know what's going to pop up next. Well, this week I experienced the negative side of that coin: My account was temporarily hijacked!
It was simply luck that these rustlers struck now instead of months ago when my account lay forgotten in the "closet." I was setting up my Obsidian vault, creating a Hub for my Hive account, setting up my goals, etc., when I noticed my HBD balance was almost non-existent.
"WTF? Where did my HBD go?"
When I looked a little further, I noticed my account was powering down.
"POWERING DOWN? WTF?? No really...WTF?!!!?!"
Who??? These guys:
Thank you to the @PeakD team for the tools so easily at hand to change my keys and find out who was stealing! And thank you for your help and information. You are the original "Kittypedia"!
These "people" didn't just target me. I strongly encourage you to go look in your own wallet and pass this on to others.
How to protect yourself?
While I wish I could tell you exactly how this happened to me, I have no idea. However, it's crucial to always use strong, unique passwords, be wary of phishing links, never share your private keys, and consider using tools like Hive Keychain for added security. Regularly review your authorized applications and revoke any suspicious ones.
Stay vigilant, fellow Hivers! The digital frontier is exciting, but dangers lurk for the unwary.
Until next time friends...
