Y'all don't forget the CONTESTS built into this series. One SBI for a name, five for the needle! That makes thirty one shares for the series if someone claims the prize before the post pays out.
On to today's featured permaculture tidbit!
Rhubarb!
Guild? Did someone say "guild?"
Did someone say "beneficial insects" too?
Did they say them about the same plant?
Guess I'm ordering some rhubarb seeds! A guy can never have too many function stacking plants. Pretty sure you can eat em too, though I never have.
A quick googling says it's high in calcium and vitamin k, as well as a bunch of other minerals like potassium and iron. Though there are warnings of some side effects, so do your own research to determine if rhubarb is the right food as medicine and medicine as food for you!
Deep taproots and perpetual growth sound like this is a dynamic accumulator. I wonder, considering the mineral content, if it'd be a good chop and drop like comfrey.
That idea, combined with the side effect warnings for both rhubarb and comfrey ingestion makes me wonder if the nutrient density in these plants is too high for our bodies. But I digress, as I'm getting out of my own league.
It's funny how a couple small pieces of information can lead your mind down a long and complicated rabbit trail when you put them together.
Side note: I'm really enjoying this series, as I am learning a lot. I love the small concise snippets of information on these cards, and it is really fueling my desire to learn more. It's a good thing I started this series in the fall and winter, as that is reading season for me while Spring and summer are doing times.
Back to rhubarb: this stuff sounds awesome! I imagine a bunch of y'all are growing it. What's your experience? Do you grow it in a guild? How do you prepare it? Do you use it in fertilizer, compost, or chop and drop? I'm curious...
Be blessed.
Be fruitful.
Stay relevant.
Nate.
