Hi steemians, I've prepared this article to share you why permaculture can support the entire population of the globe. As usual, your opinions are welcomed :)
Food demand is growing fast.
In the last few decades, scientists, chemists and agriculturists managed to improve massively the production of food. In the past 40 years, global cereal yield has doubled. However, the techniques of production we developed destroy ecosystems and put populations health at risk. And as we already know, Earth's population is growing fast. It is growing so fast that global food demand is expected to double by the next 50 years.
We're facing the challenge to maximise yields without compromising the environemental preservation and the human health.
Modern agriculture is not the solution
A lot of people believe the only way to respond to this increasing food demand is to stick with the good ol' industrialized mechanized monocultural system. And corporations want us to believe this is the only way to go because they want farmers to buy their seeds, their insecticides, their pesticides and their fertilizers.
Even though we achieved high levels of productivity, we can't claim of the success of modern agriculture to feed the planet. There are about 815 millions of people starving, mostly in Africa and Asia. At the same time, other parts of the planet struggle with obesity pandemics. The distribution of food is unequal because we centralized and globalized food markets so only people with money can eat.
Also, modern agriculture is the apology of monoculture, aka the best way to anhilitate biodiversity. Monoculture created a breach in biodiversity that put the plants at risk of weed invasions and plagues. For farmers to protect their crops, they must use an enormous amount of chemicals that pollute nature and pertubate human's endocrine system.
A modern agricultural system can neither feed all the people nor preserve nature, thus it is obviously not the solution to feed people and protect nature.
But.. Is there a way to feed everybody without causing any harm to the planet?
Permaculture provides a sustainable and productive solution with a holistic approach that considers each facet of the whole problem. We have no reason to perpetuate the mess of the actual system, and certainly no margin left to screw up. With permaculture, we can create efficient natural systems that give abundance at a low cost.
Food is the most basic and essential need and I believe we should reclaim the power to produce our own food in local, human-scaled and resilient ecosystems. Permaculture is about creating resilient and self-sufficient systems that minimize waste and maximise the available resources.
Alongside with the ingenuous blockchain technology, permaculture is an answer to a global crisis, not only to a food crisis. It's a response to an overcentralized and overglobalized world that deprive people of their lands and their rights.
We have the opportunity to return to a small-scale life, to rebuild communities and relationships with the local ones, without loosing the flexibility and the infinite knowledge of the worldwide web community.
Permaculture can feed the planet without destroying it! I'll tell you more about this soon.
PS : I wanted to thank all the supporters and the incredible community of steemit. This is only the beggining for me but i'm enjoying the good feedback.
