PHC Top 3 Monthly Contest - Extraterrestrial Movies
1 Stargate (1994)
Set using Old World Egypt allowed ones imagination to go back in time exploring history under the ancients who worshiped sun god Ra, touch back in time with current world.
A gate transporting you in a whirlpool of special effects (it was 1994), stepping through the gate into a temple on a desert planet, assisting ancient Egyptian like individuals overthrow and alien god, what a different approach in connecting old with new.
For me, living in an all male star cast home, this sent the guys into thinking of how this could possibly work, time travel through a gate. Yes black holes, time travel has never completely left the minds on how or why they exist, or could be out there.
I enjoyed the actors Kurt Russel and James Spader... so what was not to enjoy?
Before 1994, there were no Stargate TV shows, no books, and no franchise, leaving everything to your imagination, this blossomed into a great franchise in years to come.
Plot: In modern-day Egypt, professor Daniel Jackson (James Spader) teams up with retired Army Col. Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell) to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Ra (Jaye Davidson), who holds the key to the Earth travelers' safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Jackson and O'Neil must convince the planet's people that Ra must be overthrown.
2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, so much so we watched it for a second perhaps third time when the boys were old enough to enjoy again in the 1990's, still one of my favorites in how would we treat aliens if they arrived.
First sighting, story line and the idea of communicating was well thought out, at the time models were built of the mountain (some art skills in mud structures). One cannot believe this is already 40 years old, and recently enhanced for next generation to show their children.
Plot: Science fiction adventure about a group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Roy refuses to accept an explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his life to pursue the truth about UFOs.
3. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Wrapped up like a good old gum ball, it was sweet! Something young children could relate to, an imaginary friend with a glowing finger (almost as friendly as a giant big frog). This extraterrestrial movie really touched everyone at some level, it was touching, had adventure along with a crazy ending, it worked! Magic for children endearing for parents who had to sit through it a couple of times.
A nice way of teaching children to work together, bonded in friendship, love and loyalty, even when a new friend from a vastly different background arrives. An enchanting movie for children with child actors, adult scientists arrived to assist were not menacing, keeping the tone of the film really for children.
Plot: After a gentle alien becomes stranded on Earth, the being is discovered and befriended by a young boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas). Bringing the extraterrestrial into his suburban California house, Elliott introduces E.T., as the alien is dubbed, to his brother and his little sister, Gertie (Drew Barrymore), and the children decide to keep its existence a secret. Soon, however, E.T. falls ill, resulting in government intervention and a dire situation for both Elliott and the alien.
