Bras for a Cause
A few weeks ago I attended and volunteered at an event called Bras for a Cause. This event is hosted by a philanthropic organization called Soroptimists International. They are a :
global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
Philanthropists
Soroptimist International hosts this and other fundraising events throughout the year to raise money and support various causes. Funds raised from the Bras for a Cause event is designated to local hospitals to off-set costs of mammograms for women who need them and can't afford them. As everyone is aware, early detection of breast cancer can make the disease easier to treat, therefore mammograms are vitally important.
Bras for a Cause began 14 years ago with the Soroptimists of Glendale and has been going strong ever since. They have given funds to local hospitals and other non profits in and around Glendale, all with the mission to help girls and women thrive.
How Does It Work?
To begin, the Soroptismist Bras for a Cause Committee comes up with a theme. This year's theme was Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. They then reach out to various community members, businesses and other non-profits asking if they would like to create and donate a bra. As you can see, these bras are creative and gorgeous - and obviously NOT for actual wear! Bra Artists and other community members also purchase dinner tickets; part of the price of the ticket goes for the actual meal, and the rest is a donation to the fundraiser.
Attendees of the event bid on different items, such as the bras and other auction items like wine. All of these have been donated, so whatever they are auctioned off for is again part of the total raised by the Soroptimist group.
All in all, it was a lovely evening at a beautiful venue - a local country club - all to help others. Philanthropy, paying-it-forward and helping others are important values to me and my family, and I am happy to have the opportunity to help this wonderful cause each year.
Take care my friends!
