Yesterday despite the rain, I had the most exciting adventure exploring the old air base in Clark Field, Pampanga, Philippines. This is not my first time because this place has been our favorite place to visit just like in my previous post. I felt like I was stepping into a different era, with stories of courage, significance, and a never-give-up attitude. Let me share my experience, filled with simple observations, as I discovered the remains of the air base and captured moments with fascinating aircraft.
this looks epic
This place, known as Clark Air Base, was built a long time ago in 1903. Originally called Fort Stotsenburg, it was a home for the U.S. Army. As I walked through, I couldn't help but imagine the brave pilots who flew those planes during World War II. It must have been an incredibly challenging time for them.
After World War II, Clark Air Base became even more important during the Cold War period. It served as a vital location for the U.S. Air Force, who stationed their planes there to protect the Pacific region. They also used it as a stopover for people and supplies heading to Southeast Asia. Sadly, in 1991, due to the eruption of Mount Pinatubo and an expiring agreement, the U.S. military had to leave the base. ( I do not want to recall my sad experience with Mt Pinatubo eruption)
I was in awe by its massive size
As I explored the area, I came across some fascinating remnants of aircraft that were left behind. I couldn't contain my excitement when I saw a helicopter, a fighter jet, and even something that looked like a cannon. These incredible machines, although weathered and worn-out, still held traces of their former glory. I couldn't resist capturing these moments with my camera, standing next to these magnificent relics that once ruled the skies.
this is my favorite
After the U.S. military departed, the air base went through significant changes. Today, it's called Clark Freeport Zone and has transformed into a thriving business hub. It's a place where airplanes, call centers, tourism, and logistics all come together. And don't forget the Clark International Airport, which serves as an important gateway for visitors coming to the Philippines from all around the world. There are some factories too about electronics, garments and more. We also have a mall nearby.
My visit to the old air base in Clark Field was an extraordinary experience. Although I didn't have much knowledge about history, it was fascinating to see the remains of these aircraft and imagine the people who once operated them. The story of the air base lives on through the new businesses and progress that have reshaped the area. It made me appreciate how the past can have a lasting impact on the present.
As I bid farewell to Clark Field, I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness history in such a simple and personal way, capturing moments with the helicopter, fighter jet, and cannon-like object. It was an adventure I won't soon forget.
this was fun
