Many of us may question what this consciousness is. Even in mainstream science, if the word consciousness is even mentioned, it is explained as a byproduct of the activity of the brain. On one level in science, consciousness is like a chemical soup of the brain and on the deeper level, it's atoms swirling around. The byproduct of the chemical soup produces consciousness they say...somehow.
The amazing fact is those who study this without a huge ego will admit that we know almost nothing about consciousness. Certainly no one can explain what a thought is, where it resides. What is a thought? What is a memory?
There will I believe come a point in science when it will be realized consciousness transcends the brain, but is also associated with the brain in the same way a tv or radio receieves transmissions and then gives them form. It does not mean the radio or television produces the program. For example, if a brick fell onto my head, I would stop talking and it would appear I have lost consciousness. Therefore a scientist might say, "See! If you destroy the brain, you destroy consciousness." But it could be the brain would no longer be capable of transmitting or receiving consciousness, channeling consciousness into this dimension. A possibility without going too deep into philosophical speculation.
All life on this planet including your physical body and forms is given by the sun. It is a continuous outpouring of energy and why many ancient cultures prayed to it. If you want to use an analogy to conciousness, the sun is the closest proximation of the eternal. Totally undefinable, totally incomprehensible. It would be absurd to think the mind could begin to comprehend that.
Conciousness is like the rays of the sun. The sun sends out rays continuously. Every ray of consciousness becomes a human being or another life form. It connects into form. The conciousness in you, the consciousness in me is all an expression of the one conciousness. It continuously gives to all life forms and experiences itself in this dimension. It grows and evolves in this dimension gradually where there is time. As it experiences, it creates the universe. That is self exploration of consciousness in this universe. Every single one of us is an expression of this one conciousness.
Go into meditation with one simple question, "Who am I?" Now, if you come up with an answer on a conceptual level, you missed it. The secret is, there is NO answer that follows that question. There is only the space of awareness. That's who you are.
It's so simple and subtle, but humans have overlooked it for thousands of years, the simple realization of who you are. That is very much like the ray of sunlight (you) that went continuously exploring the universe and looking, thinking, getting involved in too much, and identifying everything. Suddenly you become very unhappy and you can't stand it anymore. Then you'll ask again, "Who am I?" Still no answer. Then the sunlight (you) stops being aware of doing and starts being aware of being. There's an enormous depth to it and it becomes aware it's connected to the sun.
It frees the usual state of the ego, which is fear. Suddenly the fear goes. A deep trust in life arises because you feel yourself connected to something vast that is you and yet transcends who you are. To sense that connectedness frees you from anxiety and fear.
The next step in human evolution is to live their lives in the connectedness dimension rather than in the egoic level. Then you can manifest a different world. You no longer observe this absurd level of suffering humans have inflicted on eachother that can only be described as a severe collective mental disfunction. Only then could you explain how in the first half of the 20th century alone humans have killed in excess of a million of their fellow humans. Unfortunately, that is a part of the evolution-the realization that is the insane part of the evolution of consciousness.
Every form is destined to awaken to its connectedness to the ONE conciousness.
