This tiny grasshopper landed on my hand and I realised I really didn't know very much about them. Let me share some of the things I learned:
- Grasshoppers are some of the most ancient insects
- They hatch from an egg into a "hopper" which sheds its entire body five times, looking more and more like the adult version of the insect with each shed
- When referring to one insect, it's a grasshopper. However, groups of grasshoppers swarm together to form a kind of super organism - when this happens, they're called locusts. (This reminds me of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes)
All this to say that all things lead to philosophy - even a tiny grasshopper.
