I think whether or not philosophy should be taught as a core subject in schools depends on what specifically is taught.
I think in order to have functional democracies we must have people who are thoroughly competent in distinguishing logical arguments from fallacies.
But not everything placed in the subject of philosophy is that valuable to me. Not every inquiry results in something useful. For example, we can ponder things like who is the most annoying celebrity and compile thousands of ways of evaluating it. That too falls under the category of philosophy, but leads no where.
From my perspective much of the philosophy taught in universities today is placed in the curriculum because it is odd, and therefore interesting to some people.
It’s my view that it’s best to qualify philosophy by its ability to contribute positively to our lives and avoid being trapped in the quagmire of views.
