Time passes quickly in this life. The longer we live the faster it goes. There is a reason for this if you think about it in percentages of life. Looking 10 years back for a 20 year old is half a lifetime ago, for a 40 year old it is 25 percent, an 80 year old an eighth.
The life afforded us by whatever granted it is not very long at all and we never really know how far we have left to go. If we look at the history of humankind, we are a wave of the hand, from the beginning of time, no more than a blink of an eye. For many, this realization may bring a feeling of insignificance or a lack of meaning to life itself.
Some wake each day unsure of what it will hold. This is life, uncertainty. There are countless events we are blind to, we cannot feel, we will never witness yet, they will all affect us in the most profound ways. We will act upon them and react to them, new movements will be born through us, new versions and instances of what has been going on for always.
It is empowering. All of our history is made up of uncountable movements by unknowable events. Where we are today is a continual stream of development that has been running like river through space since space began. Time itself is nothing more than a way to track movement in space, a concept of the mind that is irrelevant to all but those who realize they are alive, the conscious.
Moving fast or slow is the speed at which space is covered, how quickly it is explored. Our life is short, the fuel limited, we can only explore so far but each of us adds to the journey of those to come. Or at least, we could.
Many are frozen in space, unmoving, non-exploring. This means to be frozen in time, for without movement, time is not experienced. But space does not wait, it rushes by and if not wary, the entire space one knows has been washed away and replaced by the new explorations, the ground covered by others.
We lay in bed, anxious about challenges we will face, reserving our fuel just in case, protecting ourselves from being swept into life's stream. We think our thoughts, know we are right and repeat them over and over, a mantra of security, a tether to the bank. We do not want to explore life, it scares us. We fear to explore because of what we may find there in the unknown. Truth or lie, we fear them both.
This is not living, this is not the point, we have so little time, there is so much ground possible to cover, yet we stand, sit, avoid making a move. But in life, no move is still a move itself and one that shifts and pulls the stream. Enough non-movers, the stream of humanity slows and if all stand in place, a pool forms, and stagnates.
Where is the risk, why the fear, how much damage can be done in a blink of an eye? We all have the potential within to move, to shift, to influence the stream and what seems insignificant in the moment becomes part of a raging torrent that carves through time and creates the space for those to come.
Each of us lights the way for future generations to pick up our torch and carry it a little further. As our eyes close, their blink of an eye sees more of space, we have created a little more time for them to explore, our momentum drives them on.
Too often we look for greatness to lead the way when what drives the stream is the millions of people who arise, ignite their fuel and begin to explore the space that is offered them. Each day, over and over and over.
Life is too short to wait, to worry about what people may think, what mistakes may be made or, what lays there in the darkness. Light a match and see. The place to start is within.
