"It's not important what others say", we all face this or a similar sentence at a given point in our lives. It's taught to you that you should "do what you like" and "say what you think".
These are some basic wannabe philosophic statements everybody throws arround themselves but rarely thinks about the implications. And this led to a defiant, overestimating, ignorant generation of people who think that their own reality is the yardstick for anybody.
If a 12 year old is told to "don't listen to what others say" there is a high risk that he can not distinguish this message. In fact, you should listen to what others say. Not said you should always do what they say, but you should listen and think about their message. Sometimes people tell you the truth about yourself while you can't see it.
Education is not a good thing for everybody. Don't tell people things they can't really understand. Be careful with sentences like this if you don't know if your kid can get the message right. You don't want to raise your kid to an ignorant asshole not listening to anybody like the majority of our society.
Always listen to what others say.
