I read somewhere that a sunset would need abundant clouds to make it really beautiful. It does make sense since sunset is basically a light. An amazing light would require an element to receive its illumination, otherwise we can’t perceive its presence.
In the case of this photo, the sky is obviously lacking a bunch of clouds on it. The only hint that we have that can say that we are viewing a sunset is the haze along the horizon. It absorbs the light from the warm sun which results to an orange-ish or yellowish hue on it.
On the other hand, the rough waves of the sea creates a strong textural contrast to the dull sky. Some of the warm sunlight is depicted on the waves which creates a contrast of light & shadows on its surface.
