Yesterday (on 2021.12.13) I saw in this post from that he is using the PhotoDirector application to edit the photo in his post. I have not heard about PhotoDirector before, but somehow it immediately caught my attention. I wrote in this comment that I will try it out.
There are many filters and effects in PhotoDirector. Today I tried PhotoDirector for the first time, and I decided to use the Aurora filter on a photo I took today morning. This is the end result:
I currently do not understand how this application works. It is probably using some kind of algorithm or AI (artificial intelligence) to distinguish the various things (for example buildings, roads, trees, the sky, the clouds) from each other.
It is not perfect, especially around the trees, but it is still very much impressive for a free smartphone application. Of course I do not expect professional environment detection from an application like this. Especially not after a single touch.
Fun fact:
It is possible to actually see Aurora in my country (in Hungary) in real life, but very rarely. I have not seen Aurora in real life so far. For example there was an occasion in 2015, when you could see real Aurora in Budapest. And the previous occasion was approximately 10 years before that. So it is indeed possible to see Aurora in Hungary, but very rarely.
