Walking into the Light
In certain parts of a wedding day you have to make decisions really quickly. We were working in a beautiful venue in Ireland with these amazing green walls, but it was extremely dark! I knew Isobel would be walking down these stairs to head to the church so I knew it was going to be a possibility to get the shot, there was a large window half way up the stairs so I had the choice of facing her straight on and getting her walking down towards me or use flash. Instead I wanted to have the green background so I chose to stand lower down on the staircase pointing up at Isobel walking down the stiars. With the light beaming straight at Isobel it created this amazing soft light and really set off her beautiful coloured hair. I loved the shape of her dress and veil as she walked down the stairs, and was glad I didn't just go for the safest shot I could in this situation! Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts! Knowing where the light is is so important and how to work with it in a dark venue is key. We always carry lots of flash gear and love using it but if we can avoid it we always do!
