I was visiting a local botanical garden when I spotted this bright red in a sea of green - I had to take a photo of this! As I approached closer, I noticed that this was in fact a pineapple. Now, most people associate pineapples with the color yellow, maybe orange, but not red!
So let me introduce you to the red pineapple, Ananas bracteatus. This plant is most commonly used for ornamental purposes, but its flesh is edible - it's just smaller, seedier, and less juicy (translation - much less tasty) than the pineapples we are familiar with in the store.
The leaves of this plant, as you can see in the picture, are very sharp! Because of this trait, many people actually use this as a security hedge! Can you imagine how painful it would be to try to get through many of them!? Ouch!
