Close to where I live is the ambush site where Michael Collins was shot killed by the IRA on the 22 of August 1922. This was after the treaty of independence was signed (which he was part of) and he was part of the freestate army, he was a major figure in the IRA during the war of independence but was seen as a traitor as the IRA was fighting for a free Ireland and the treaty only included 28 counties as a free Ireland. 6 counties in the north of Ireland still belonged and carried on under British rule.
