Peruvian Spider Lily
Hymenocallis festalis
Just a bulb with its will to survive...
These flowers are from the bulbs that I adopted from my father's garden when my parents moved to a new home in 2018.
To be totally honest, I'm so pleased that these bulbs survived the move as I did lose many other cuttings that never went the distance and couldn't rise up to the challenge.
Anyhoo, I believe I have correctly identified the plant, based on this image found at Dave's Garden.
After finding the botanical name, an internet search using the words 'Hymenocallis festalis' led me to Nurseries Online Australia who describe the plant as follows.
a perfumed flowering bulb with attractive flowers. The flowers of the ‘Spider Lily’ are trumpet-shaped with a spidery edge like a large ‘hoop petticoat with frills’, plants will reach around 40cm
The descriptions provided on both websites along with several images confirmed my choice however I was very interested to learn that the flower is known by several other names. Peruvian Spider Lily is the one that was most often referred to and hence the reason why I chose this for my title. Other names include Peruvian Daffodil, Spider Lilly, Ismene and sometimes Sea Daffodil.
My favourite, and the name that I will grace them with from this moment on is...
The Sacred Lily of the Incas - Isn't that just beautiful..?
This majestic bloom certainly is worthy of such an exquisite name, both are as equally beautiful as the other.
Even though these last two shots aren't in the best focus, I have included them because I just love the bokeh captured in the background, not to mention the golden glow from the sunset. This is definitely a composition that I will be trying to recreate and improve upon.
Thanks for stopping by and reading my post, I really do appreciate your time.
