"My, my, eat dat pasty pie, gotta go down to da ski jump, watch da Finlanders fly..."
Hello, steemians! Welcome to my page, eh!
So, last weekend was the big annual ski jumping tournament here at the Pine Mountain ski jump. That got me to thinking about doing a post about the ski jump.
According to wikipedia, the building of the ski jump was started in 1937 and finished in 1938. When originally built, it was 156 feet tall, 48 meters. In 1977, it was rebuilt to 176 feet tall, 54meters. The ski jump has hosted an annual international jumping tournament for many years, currently hosting the Continental cup tournament. Excluding ski flying jumps, Pine Mountain is the tallest ski jump in the United States and is between the 3rd and the 8th tallest man made ski jump in the world. Including the hill it's built on top of, the top is almost 600 feet above the surrounding landscape. The current record for the longest jump is 471 feet, or 143.5 meters, set by Stefan Thurnbichler of Austria on February 15, 2009.
Here, we are at the bottom of the end of the ski jump run.
Here's a look up the hill at the jump, using the telephoto feature on my camera.
After I took these photos, I decided to drive around the south side of the hill an up to the top of the hill. There's an access road that goes right up to the base of the ski jump scaffold. So, here's what the scaffold looks like from close up.
Here's the view out over the landscape from the end of the jump.
Here's a look up the jump from the bottom of the slide. Climbing to the top of the jump in the summer is a real workout, it gets quite steep up there. I was going to climb it last summer, but it was a windy day, and that was freaking me out, so I didn't make it even half way before I had to climb back down.
I walked to the edge of the hill in front of the jump and took a picture looking down the hill.
Here's a look at the sign on the side of the building next to the ski jump on top of the hill.
I took all of these pictures today, February 15, 2018 with my little Nikon Coolpix L 19 digital camera. The sky was overcast and the temperature was about 30 degrees F. I didn't manipulate the photos in any way, just posted them the way they came from the camera.
Well, that's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!
Thanks for stopping by and checking out my post, eh!
As always, feel free to leave a comment or a question if you would like.
May the Steem Force be with you!
