You might know the Gowanus canal as a dirty polluted creek... well, back in the day it was a saltwater estuary - a tidal inlet connected to the ocean surrounded by mile wide salt marshes.
The waters was teemed with fish, eels, dinner plate sized oysters, dolphins , whales and even porpoises.
It’s hard to imagine that now. It’s crazy that only 400 years ago this polluted creek was so filled with life.
