In my country, trees, specially in the towns, are considered as enemy of politicians, so they use every opportunity to cut them completely or at least mutilate them.
Why they are enemy? Bcs trees cover ground that they find great for putting thousands of tones of concrete. Also, it obscures the view on their concrete masterpieces. Is there a better feeling than walking down the streets of city in the middle of the summer and concrete is all around you? Do you have oven association now?
At first, they were giving some stupid explanations why trees have to be cut but then did not want to take even that effort to say something.
One thing is to trim a plant or take down very sick ones and another to mutilate it with no reason. Most of the trees they cut are not nuisance to any infrastructure around. They are homes of some birds, shelter from the sun and oxygen suppliers.
But all that is not important, what is, is the profit that decision makers can take from actions like this. They live in their high castles, protected from moral, practical, legal, consequences of their decisions.
cut these trees, obscures the view of the building
Protest, petitions, obstructions of works...sometimes they promise to cancel project, until one day we wake up and realize that trees are gone. There are photos and videos of workers cutting during the night. Classy, isn.t it?
For common citizens that, for example, want to cut a tree in their yard, approval and tax is needed.
No one is above the law, right? ha-ha.
Although we have groups of activists that plant baby trees, those are now to small and too weak ... hope that we will not be left with just Memory of the trees :(
How are trees treated in your country?
