Male Red-winged Blackbird posing.
Today, after some household duties took up most of the morning, I decided to scour the Chamber's Creek Trail looking for the Great-horned Owls that Jason finds there every time he goes out. I walked the whole trail, from the parking at the fish ladder all the way up to the end of the trail and back, without any luck. It was pretty good god birding by ear, but with the leaf canopy fully out it was somewhat dark and photography opportunities were lacking. I did manage both the male Red-winged Blackbird above, as well as this female:
A Spotted Towhee popped into enough light for this shot:
After returning home for an early dinner and a break, I met four birding buddies and we headed to Graham were a Rotary friend, Tim Mellema, has a Barn Owl nest in the porch attic of his guest house. We were able to hear the young Barn Owl calling from the nest, but never got sight of the adults. Ryan saw the young bird come to the opening of the attic momentarily. I manged a recording, but it is too quiet to bother posting to eBird.
The best part of birding today was that the predicted rain didn't really amount to much, and I stayed dry. Getting out with friends also made the day better.
Savannah Sparrow photo from yesterday. I am surprised at the head shape from this angle, it just looks so skinny.
Until next time. Good birding. Steem on!
