🇵🇭 This week, we are in the Philippines 🇵🇭
Today, we are looking at a few of Apo Island's coral reefs. These shots are all from Katipanan and Rock Point, two of the dive sites on the south of the island. Beautiful sites that have good coral cover. Another favourite site of ours is Coconut in the north, which is an epic drift dive that whips you past the areas of Apo Island with the highest biomass of fish.
🤿
You may notice in the photos that some areas are dominated by soft corals, this may be the result of the destructive fishing practices used on Apo Island in the past.
🐠
Prior to the creation of the marine protected area on Apo Island, destructive fishing practices like dynamite and cyanide fishing had been used. Dynamite fishing has a terrible impact on the ecosystem, destroying the structural complexity and turning the reef into rubble. If coral larvae do manage to outcompete the algae for this new space, it is often the soft corals that win as they are usually faster growing than the hard corals. Thanks to the creation of the marine protected area at Apo Island these practices are no longer a problem.
🧨
Tomorrow, we will join the kids from Apo and venture over to Siquijor Island, where Mario plans on introducing his program to the next community.
⛵
See you there!
