Ninghai - A marriage museum / Ein Ehemuseum

At the end of May 2008 the Polytechnic, in an effort to keep the foreign teachers happy, took us on a trip to Ninghai, a county in the southwest of Ningbo. The first station on the trip was a marriage museum.	Ende Mai 2008 spendierte das Polytechnikum den ausländischen Lehrern einen Ausflug nach Ninghai, einen Stadtkreis im Südwesten Ningbos. Die erste Station auf dem Trip war ein Ehemuseum.

Well, what I call marriage museum, the official title is something like Ningbo Museum of Dowry Culture (Shili Hongzhuang, 十里红妆). It's located pretty much in the centre of Ninghai county. The museum I visited in 2008 does not seem to exist anymore, for what I can gather. They built a new one instead, which opened in 2018. The link above brings you to the new location.	Naja, was ich so Ehemuseum nenne. Der offizielle Name lautet 'Ningbomuseum der Mitgiftkultur (Shili Hongzhuang, 十里红妆)'. Es befindet sich ungefähr in der Mitte des Stadtkreises. Das Museum, in dem ich 2008 war, scheint nicht mehr zu existieren, soweit ich das sehe. Man hat stattdessen ein neues gebaut, das 2018 eröffnet wurde. Der obige Link führt zum neuen Standort.

The museum shows the material aspects of marriage in China during Ming & Qing. When you see red here, you're not mistaken. Weddings & marriage in China are pretty red, because red is considered a very auspicious colour. Only occasionally the stuff on show was not dominated by red, like these 2 collars:	Das Museum konzentriert sich auf die materiellen Aspekte der Ehe in China während Ming & Qing. Wer rot sieht, liegt nicht falsch. Hochzeit & Ehe sind in China sehr rot, da dies eine sehr glückverheißende Farbe sein soll. Nur ab & zu war das ausgestellte Zeug nicht rot dominiert, wie z.B. diese beiden Kragen:

Everything directly related to the wedding, should have an auspicious red. Hence the bridal sedan chairs are particularly red. The more red lacquer, the better (& the richer the families involved). OK, gold is important, too. The richer, the more decorations & the more of the decorations are gilded.	Alles, was mit der Hochzeit selber zu tun hat, sollte glückbringend rot sein. Dementsprechend sind die Brautsänften ganz besonders rot. Je mehr roter Lack, desto besser (& desto reicher die involvierten Familien). Na gut, auch Gold ist wichtig. Je reicher, desto mehr Ornamente & desto mehr der Ornamente sind vergoldet.

The basic construction is of course wood. Added are several layers of lacquer. The more, the better. Ornaments are either carved in the wood or the dried lacquer & then coated with gold. Silk curtains are supposed to keep the bride from view. These boxes can get quite heavy. From what I have read, the heaviest ones had to be carried by 8 men. I suppose, the above belongs to that class.

Die Grundstruktur ist natürlich aus Holz. Darauf werden dann mehrere Lagen Lack verteilt. Je mehr, desto besser. Dekoration wird entweder ins Holz oder in den trockenen Lack geschnitzt & dann vergoldet. Seidenvorhänge sollen verhindern, daß man die Braut sieht. Diese Kisten können recht schwer sein. Habe gelesen, daß die schwersten von 8 Männern getragen werden mußten. Nehme an, das Ding oben gehört in diese Klasse.

The inside is not quite as decorated & actually looks quite uncomfortable. The bride herself doesn't seem to be of the greatest importance here. Although they probably added some cushions, so it wasn't quite as bad as it looks.	Innen sind die Sänften nicht gar so ausgiebig dekoriert & sehen sogar eher unbequem aus. Die Braut selber scheint nicht gerade höchste Priorität zu genießen. Man hat aber wohl einige Kissen reingesteckt, so daß es nicht so schlimm war, wie es aussieht.

The above is probably part of the dowry & would be carried in the wedding procession, which could be kilometres long in case of rich people. What these boxes are, I don't know. The plaque in front of the first says 龙纹杠箱 (lóng wén gāng xiāng), which Google translates as dragon bar box. Make of it what you like.	Oben sieht man vermutlich einen Teil der Mitgift, der in der Hochzeitsprozession (die mehrere Kilometer lang sein konnte, je nach Reichtum) mitgetragen wurde. Worum es sich handelt, kann ich nicht sagen. Die Beschriftung lautet 龙纹杠箱 (lóng wén gāng xiāng), was Google als Drachenbalkenkiste übersetzt.

Same goes for the above. Google doesn't even give me a translation for 礼银担, only the pinyin lǐ yín dān. A Baidu searchs only resulted in another picture of such a box from a marriage museum.	Gleiches gilt für die Dinger oben. Google übersetzt nicht mal 礼银担, sondern zeigt nur Pinyin lǐ yín dān. Baidu gibt mir nur ein anderes Bild von einer solchen Kiste auch aus einem Ehemuseum.

Makeup essentials. Judging from the pliers & the scraper, makeup in the olden times in China was heavy duty.	Schminke muß sein. Die Zangen & der Spachtel deuten darauf hin, daß Make-up im alten China harte Arbeit war.

Shoes for the lady of the house. Beauty in China back then was a brutal affair. To fit the beauty ideal & to fit into these shoes, you needed lotus feet.	Schuhe für die Dame des Hauses. Schönheit war damals in China eine brutale Angelegenheit. Eine Frau, die dem Schönheitsideal entsprechen & in diese Schuhe passen wollte, brauchte Lotusfüße.

At least they had some bedroom hygiene. Wash stands (in the back with a basin).	Immerhin gab es Schlafzimmerhygiene. Waschtische (im Hintergrund mit Becken).

Looks like a chair, but is (probably) a commode.	Sieht aus wie ein Stuhl, ist aber wohl eine Kommode.

A story board. I think, you usually found these as decoration on bed frames, not necessarily hanging at the wall.	Geschnitzte Geschichte. Wurde vermutlich meist als Dekoration an Bettrahmen angebracht, nicht unbedingt an die Wand gehängt.

Wood art. What it is supposed to show, I don't know. Wouldn't rule out some strange sex position.	Holzkunst. Keine Ahnung, was das sein soll. Nicht auszuschließen, daß es eine seltsame Sexposition ist.

Since they didn't have TV, radio or internet, people needed to provide their own entertainment. Music was one of the harder ways to entertain yourself (unless you paid others for playing). Here are some classic Chinese instruments, from left to right: Yueqin, erhu, pipa or liuqin & perhaps a qinqin.	Man hatte weder TV, noch Radio oder Internet, also mußte man seine Unterhaltung selbst gestalten. Musik ist eine der schwierigeren Möglichkeiten (es sei denn man bezahlt jemanden dafür). Hier sieht man einige klassische chinesische Instrumente, von links nach rechts: Yueqin, Erhu, Pipa oder Liuqin & vielleicht eine Qinqin.

Finally! The most important part of marriage: the bed. Depending on your wealth, it could be less (above) or more (below) elaborate.	Endlich! Der Mittelpunkt einer Ehe: das Bett. Je nach Reichtum war es mehr (oben) oder weniger (unten) stark verziert.

Stools like the above are still quite popular in China. Particularly in Canton I have seen them often.	Hocker wie die oben sind auch heute noch recht populär. Besonders in Kanton sieht man sie oft.

Some beds for poor buggers. Not even properly red. Tststs...	Einige Betten für arme Socken. Nicht mal richtig rot. Tststs...

If you're rich enough, the bed in & of itself can be a whole room. (OK, not really red either. I blame the age.)	Wenn man reich genug ist, kann das Bett alleine schon ein ganzes Zimmer sein. (OK, auch nicht wirklich rot. Ich schieb's auf's Alter.)

Don't really know whether you want to have a Buddha watch over your bedtime activities. Then again, in old China, the aim of bedtime activities was the production of as many children as possible. & you probably need some luck there.	Weiß nicht, ob man unbedingt einen Buddha braucht, der über nächtliche Aktivitäten wacht. Andererseits war im alten China das Ziel solcher Aktivitäten die Produktion sovieler Kinder wie möglich. Da braucht man vermutlich etwas spirituelle Unterstützung.
