Only one week since my last SMS View. Getting better. & I finally started preparing a new China-related article, about Chinese family names. So, just like winter, my procrastination slowly comes to an end. Sadly, the lockdown here in Patras only got worse. Now you're only allowed outside in a radius of 2km, even for shopping. But back to the sea. Today's photos are from early July 2020.
Nur eine Woche seit dem letzten MBM-Blick. Es wird besser. & ein neuer Artikel über China ist auch in der Mache, zum Thema chinesische Nachnamen. Wie der Winter kommt also auch meine Tiefschlafphase langsam zu einem Ende. Der Lockdown hier wird aber leider nur schlimmer. Jetzt darf man sich nur noch in einem Radius von 2km bewegen, sogar zum Einkaufen. Egal, zurück zum Meer. Die heutigen Fotos stammen von Anfang Juli.
A blood moon was in the sky. Not quite full yet. My camera had a bit of a problem with it. For a proper focussed picture, I had to set the exposure time rather high at 1/40th of a second. Only then the colour was rather faint:
Ein Blutmond am Himmel. Noch nicht ganz voll. Meine Kamera wollte nicht so richtig. Für einen ordentlichen Fokus musste ich die Verschlusszeit auf 1/40 Sekunde setzen. Dann war aber die Farbe zu blass:
With 1/30th of a second, the colour is much closer to what it was in reality, but you can't recognise much:

Had another try at a proper blood moon the next night, but more about that later. First, I went to sleep & then in the evening of that day, I went to the coast for some nice sunset pics. I was rather late, so it starts with a very nice orange:
In der nächsten Nacht versuchte ich mich nochmal am Blutmond, aber später mehr dazu. Zunächst ging ich schlafen & am Abend des nächsten Tages fuhr ich zur Küste für ein paar Sonnenuntergangsbilder. War schon ziemlich spät, weshalb es mit einem dicken Orange losgeht:
As much as I like orange, that was not the best photo of the sunset that day. The western sky as a whole was really nice:
So sehr ich auch Orange mag, das beste Bild dieses Sonnenuntergangs war ein anderes. Der westliche Himmel als Ganzes:
I already used this pic somewhere, probably for Appreciate Beauty of Nature with Hive account@phortun. But that was so long ago, that I can't be sure. (Crappy memory, you know.) The next image is mostly interesting for the strange deformation of the sun. A similar deformation was visible on the underside, before the sun moved behind those hills. So, probably some athmospheric phenomenon.
Das Bild habe ich damals schonmal auf Hive verwendet. Wo genau, weiß ich wegen meines tollen Gedächtnisses nicht mehr. Das nächste Bild ist hautpsächlich wegen der Deformation der Sonne interessant. Eine ähnliche Deformation gab es vorher schon an der Unterseite der Sonne, bevor sie hinter den Hügeln verschwand. Vermutlich also ein atmosphärisches Phänomen.
After the sun had disappeared, I focused my attention to the ground, as usual. There were a few crabs around, but not many in a reasonable range, so I got only the 2 below:
Nachdem die Sonne weg war, wandte ich mich wie üblich dem Grund zu. Es hingen zwar einige Krabben rum, aber nicht viele in annehmbarer Distanz. Deshalb erwischte ich nur diese 2:
There were also some nice rocks around (also as usual). Nice enough for Hive account@shasta's #boldersunday, I hope. This one is interesting for its strange combination of features. Looks like it wanted to become a meat stone, but didn't really get there:
Gab auch wieder einige nette Steine. Der hier ist wegen seiner seltsamen Kombination von Elementen interessant. Sieht aus, als wollte er ein Speckstein werden, wußte aber nicht genau, wie:
The next one is also a combination stone. Not sure whether that one is natural, though, because that separating line is suspiciously straight.
Der nächste ist auch ein Kombistein. Keine Ahnung, ob er natürlichen Ursprungs ist. Diese Trennlinie ist verdächtig gerade.
A third combination stone (& a sepia shell) is way below in the 'other' pictures. For now, the most interesting find of the day: another crab (or, well, parts of it):
Ein dritter Kombistein (& eine Sepiaschale) findet sich unter den 'weiteren' Bildern. Jetzt geht es erstmal um den interessantesten Fund des Tages: noch eine Krabbe (naja, Teile davon):
Yes, I have a morbid fascination for dead animals, but really, that one does look nice. Sadly, I have never found such a crab alive here. The only ones I see crabbing around here are these small marbled rock crabs as the two above.
Ja doch, ich habe eine morbide Faszination für tote Tiere, aber dieses sieht doch echt gut aus. Leider habe ich hier noch keine solche Krabbe lebend gesehen. Die einzigen, die mir hier lebend begegnen, sind diese kleinen Rennkrabben wie die beiden oben.
These are probably the remains of a warty crab, but I'm not sure. The predator seemingly was only interested in the main body or lost track of the claw arms.
Es handelt sich wahrscheinlich um die Überreste eines Italienischen Taschenkrebses. Der Angreifer war wohl nur am Körper interessiert, oder hat vielleicht die Klauen aus den Augen verloren.
After that nice dead crab, I went home. This is not yet the end, though. The following morning, I tried again to get a proper bloody moon photo.
Nach dieser hübschen, toten Krabbe fuhr ich nach Hause. Bin damit aber noch nicht am Ende. Am folgenden Morgen versuchte ich mich nochmal an einem Blutmondbild.
As you can see, it was a bloody failure. I went to a place just below the Patras Castle, from where you have a nice view over the city. But by the time the moon was low enough to get a really nice colour, the sky was already too bright for it to show properly. On the way home to finally find some sleep, I found something else which was interesting, though:
Tja, war wohl nix. War extra zu einem Platz direkt unter der Burg von Patras gefahren, von dem man einen schönen Blick über die Stadt hat. Aber als der Mond tief genug für ein schönes Rot war, war der Himmel auch schon zu hell. Auf dem Nachhauseweg fand ich dann aber doch noch etwas Interessantes:
When I saw that, I first thought, those round stones might be parts of old pillars built into a wall. Old though they might be, they are not from pillars. On closer inspection, they look very much like millstones:
Dachte zunächst, man hätte vielleicht ein paar alte Säulenteile in einer Mauer verbaut. Mag sein, daß die Stücke alt sind, aber nicht von Säulen. Wie sich herausstellte, handelt es sich wohl eher um Mühlsteine:
Don't really understand why you would use them this way, but obviously it makes sense or else people wouldn't have bothered.
Weiß nicht, warum man sie auf diese Weise verwendet, aber es ergibt offenbar Sinn, sonst hätte man es nicht gemacht.
When I was finally home, the sun's rays were shining over the Panachaiko in the east. Together with the way the clouds layered over the mountains, it was nice enough to keep me up for another quarter or so.
Als ich nach Hause kam, schienen die Sonnenstrahlen über den Panachaiko im Osten. Zusammen mit den Wolkenlagen über den Bergen war das interessant genug, mich noch eine Weile wachzuhalten.
These photos are made essentially from my home, which is more or less a hut on the roof of an apartment building. Which gives it a nice view at least, although it's not a nice room. Below you can see the view towards the sea:
Diese Fotos habe ich quasi von zuhause aufgenommen, das eigentllich nur eine Hütte auf dem Dach eines Mehrfamilienhauses ist. So hat man immerhin einen guten Ausblick, wenn auch kein gutes Zimmer. Unten sieht man die Aussicht Richtung Meer:
