We all tend to think we live in a boring place, and we long for all those exotic places you see in tourist brochures. Me, I am lucky enough to live in one of those exotic places, though of course it doesn't feel that way. To me, New York seems like a wonderfully exotic place to go visit, while many New Yorkers no doubt dream about visiting South Africa.
One thing about South Africa: you don't necessarily have to go visit some far-off national park to see something of interest. I live in Pretoria, and within twenty minutes' drive from me there are several small wildlife reserves, and because in some of these they don't keep dangerous animals, you can freely walk around and explore. This way you can get quite close to the animals and even do a bit of wildlife photography with a humble point-and-shoot camera:
