This fuzzy little critter crossed my path, as I was busy taking photos of the Howick Waterfall. I placed my handbag on the wall and as I was about to pick it up, I spotted this beautiful white hairy caterpillar. I thought it would be easy to identify it but I have been struggling for days with no luck.
There are hundreds of thousands, species of butterflies and moths in the world. The caterpillar/larva term is used for the stage of an insect’s life between the egg and pupa.
Caterpillars have three true legs, four prolegs and an anal clasper to help them walk and hold unto things.
The caterpillar’s body is divided in about 12 segments, 3 thoracic segments in the front close to the head and 9 abdominal segments.
The caterpillar use these little hairy bristles with venom glands as defense against predators.
This caterpillar looks like a cute little innocent fur-ball but is anything but, this critter will cause quite a painful sting which can last for days.
