Mother's Day Sunday, being that both of my sons, one who lives in Seattle and the other in San Francisco could not come down for the weekend, my boyfriend was so thoughtful to plan a little drive up north from Orange County for us to explore a new beach, Abalone Cove.
Even though we were born and raised in Southern California, we are still discovering new beaches, we are so fortunate.
Our adventure at Abalone Cove:
View of Abalone Cove from the small parking lot
Abalone Cove view from Abalone Cove Trail.
On the beach of Abalone Cove
Leaving Abalone Beach to head up the trail to Sacred Cove.
In order to get to the next cove, Sacred Cove, you must hike back up. We took Olmstead trail.
Beautiful wild flowers on the Olmstead Trail.
Heading toward Sacred Cove on the Portuguese Point Loop Trail.
Breathtaking view of the Sacred Cove from the Portuguese Point Loop Trail.
Protruding ridge in the tide pools of the east side of the Sacred Cove.
View toward west side.
Walking to the west side, here is a succulent type of ground cover. I believe it's edible, but don't quote me on that!! ;)
Now we're on the west side... here water flows through this cave and comes roaring out into the cove.
View back to the East side of the cove.
Truly incredible rock formation on the west side!
We needed to hike back up to the main trail from here. There's only two ways up, one from the west and one from the east. We assumed the trails were closed due to the heavy rains we had the previous months. Both trails out had this sign indicating the trail was closed, but we had to use it to get back up. It was a pretty aggressive short hike up.
Another view of the Abalone Cove on the way back.
After this wonderful hike, we ended with a healthy picnic lunch under the one shade tree available. What a beautiful day with great memories.
Fun way to see our route from my Microsoft Band!!
Thanks for sharing this day with me, I hope you enjoy the photos.
Go out and explore!
