In this collection, I would like to show you the different type of birds that can be found on Runde - the bird island in Norway. Of course, the island is famous for the huge colonies of puffins and they attract tourists, photographers both amateurs and professionals, but you can meet many interesting types of birds there. Todays main character will be the great skua (Stercorarius skua), it’s the largest representative of the Stercorariidae family, growing up to 65 cm in length and weighing 1.8 kg, with a wingspan of up to 150 cm.
Chciałbym tą serią postów pokazać Wam poszczególne gatunki ptaków jakie można spotkać na Runde – wyspie ptaków w Norwegii. Oczywiście wyspa przede wszystkim słynie z ogromnej koloni maskonurów i to one przyciągają najwięcej turystów, fotografów zarówno amatorów jak i profesjonalistów, jednak można tam spotkać wiele bardzo ciekawych gatunków ptaków. Dzisiejszym bohaterem będzie wydrzyk wielki (Stercorarius skua) jest to największy przedstawiciel z rodziny wydrzyków, osiąga długość nawet do 65 cm i waży 1,8 kg, a rozpiętość skrzydeł sięga 150 cm.
It’s a migratory of birds, breeds in the colonies or individually on the North Atlantic islands. It eats fish, eats waste thrown from fishing boats, robs other birds' nests of eggs and small birds.
Jest to ptak wędrowny, gniazduje w koloniach lub pojedyńczo na wyspach północnoatlantyckich. Żywi się rybami, zjada odpatki wyrzucane z kutrów rybackich, rabuje gniazda innych ptaków z jaj i piskląt.
I don’t want to bore you with his description, which everyone can find on the Internet, so I will only focus on my experience in photographing these birds. On the island of Runde, while climbing the viewpoints, it’s one of the first species that we will meet on our way.

Luckily for us, this birds is not skittish and it happened to me that I had to withdraw to fit it all in the camera frame. Of course, such situations only take place very early in the morning or late in the evening when there ain’t many tourists. Due to the fact that I often spend the night at the Runde viewpoints (you cannot use tents, so I sleep in the open sky), I like to sit with a cup of coffee in the company of Great Skua at sunrise, even 2-3m away and admire the sun rising
Ptak ten na nasze szczęście nie jest płochliwy i zdarzało mi się , że musiałem się wycofywać by zmieścić go całego w kadrze aparatu oczywiście takie sytuacje mają miejsce tylko bardzo wczesnym rankiem lub późnym wieczorek gdy nie ma dużo turystów. Z racji , że często nocuję na punktach widokowych Runde (nie można używać namiotów więc śpię pod gołym niebem) to lubię o wschodzie słońca usiąść sobie z kubkiem kawy w towarzystwie Great skua w odległości nawet 2-3m od niego i podziwiać jak słońce wschodzi.
