Good day dear Hiveans, first of all I would like to welcome you to my new post and wish you a pleasant day. I would like to present a new plant and hope you find my pictures beautiful and the post informative!
Cherry laurel or Common laurel can be seen here, which is also scientifically called Prunus laurocerasus and it is mainly distributed in Asia Minor and Europe. This perennial plant is also often planted artificially as an ornamental plant in gardens or parks. The name of the genus Prunus goes back to Latin and means plum and the genus was established by Carl von Linné in 1753. The flowering period is between April and June and beautiful flowers are formed, which, are not very insect-friendly.
The healing effect is also interesting, it is often used in homeopathy as a remedy for asthma and other lung diseases due to the properties. From a medical point of view, the oil is particularly interesting, but it is important to know that cherry laurel is poisonous and, like many other medicinal plants, can only be useful in the right form of application. As always, you should always ask your doctor about the correct use and dosage!
Prunus laurocerasus was already a very appreciated ornamental plant in ancient times and wreaths were made from the leaves, which are probably symbolically very well known and can also be found in heraldry in various coats of arms. The leaves are considered a typical symbol of eternal life, fame, or friendship and there are also interesting connections from a mythological point of view.
In ancient Rome, it is with one of the most important gods connected, Jupiter, who was often symbolized with a laurel wreath. Also in Greek mythology there are some legends that are related, for example to Apollo and Daphne. According to a legend, the nymph Daphne was transformed by her father into a laurel shrub to protect her from Apollo.
