The geological outcrop of Opoki is located about 70 kilometers west of Velikiy Ustyug near the village of Threshold.
The name of the village is not by chance. Next to it, at the steep bend of the Sukhona river, there really is a one and a half kilometer threshold, which is considered the most dangerous on the Sukhona. With a very small depth, the flow velocity here reaches five meters per second, which is comparable with mountain rivers. It was not by chance that in the old days it was customary to pray before passing the ship through the Opoki. In former times, to carry out barges through the Opoka roll, the work of barge haulers was used to keep ships on the fairway and save them from being hit by stones.
