The body is elongated, covered with a small scale of cycloid. It reaches up to 125 cm in length. During the dry season, the protégé is buried in the mud, creating a kind of pocket that protects him. It does not make a cocoon. When the tank is completely dry, the fish becomes estivation.
Adult individuals feed on plants and invertebrates. They build a nest in the ground. The male takes care of the eggs and offspring. In the young there are external gills that disappear after 6 weeks.
