I took this photo of a power transmission tower recently. Current events and natural disasters, hurricanes and flooding, caused me to reflect on the frailty of our power grid and how it is a metaphor for societies.
How would we fare as a collective under prolonged power outages? Would we go down as well, just like the power?
I'm not certain I really want to know the answer. Below are my thoughts on the matter written in prose poetry.

The Grid
Interconnected
Like lines of a circuit board
Power transmission along a thin copper strand
Our nation linked like grains in the same pile of sand
Take too many grains away and they all sink down
Our dependency on one and other highlighted starkly
Like a metaphor for life the grid speaks loudly
Learn to get along with each other or pay the price profoundly
Life without power for day or week is like a camping trip
Families happily lock arms in huddles keeping warm while telling stories
The thought of extended and widespread blackout however makes one hold their breath
No longer a walk in the park it is a matter of life or death
As systems of electrical infrastructure need to be robust
So does our systems of communication and values among ourselves
A culture of compassion and understanding leading to rational action
Is the only thing that will save a humanity thrust into darkness and isolation
