This series will go country by country through my two-year trip. I plan on sharing some experiences, thoughts, and photos of each country that I visited.
Country by Country 14: Italy
My brother left Istanbul early in the morning. I had a few hours to kill, then took a taxi to the airport. The flight to Rome was short and painless. Rome was the only place in Italy that I visited on this trip.
I had arranged with my guesthouse to be picked up from the airport. The owners of the guesthouse were kind and gave me a little tour of the neighborhood before checking me into my room. After I put my bags down, I went out for a walk.
Normally, I don't do anything on travel days. I get to my room, then go out looking for food and beer. In Rome, there were amazing attractions to see right down the road. While walking, I kept coming across crazy old buildings and artifacts from the times of legend. It was awesome. I went to the Coliseum a few hours after arriving in Rome.
By this point in my trip, I was sick to death of European cities and tourists. Rome was a European city and it was full of tourists, but I still loved it. It was one of my favorite stops in Europe. I don't consider myself a history buff, but I couldn't help but be awed by all of the history on display in Rome. I consider Rome to be a must-see destination.
I ended up taking too many photos in Rome. I think I'm going to do a bonus post for Rome to show off some of the art that I saw there. This post will mostly focus on the buildings and things that I saw outside. I'll do a quick post to show off some of the indoor art later.
Here are some of my photos of Rome.
A building with Jesus on it.
I wonder how they got this huge thing to Rome over a thousand years ago. It doesn't seem possible with modern tools, let alone ancient tools.
A triumphal arch, viewed from the Coliseum.
A closer look at the arch.
Obligitory Coliseum photo.
Drinking Itialian beer next to the Coliseum. When in Rome...
A cool statue of a griffon.
I think this is a memorial for fallen soldiers.
A view of Rome.
The Column of Marcus Aurelius. I saw two of these columns and they are my favorite thing in Rome. They are basically comic books about battle.
A closer view of the Column of Marcus Aurelius.
Rome.
A river view.
In Rome, they have buildings like this. They're covered in paintings, but don't even have windows.
A bird at the Vatican.
Many of the plazas are full of tourists like this.
A big church that was made for the old gods.
A cool looking building.
So there you have it, some of my favorite outdoor photos from Rome.
After Rome, I went back to Germany for a couple of weeks, then I went to Portugal to meet with my mom. Stay tuned for my Portugal post, coming soon!
